We all held our breath
As a hundred year cedar lost a battle with the storm
And with his own bare hands
My Dad made a home from it to keep us warm

He worked like a dog
Had the furniture built before winter arrived
The way he held the wood
You’d swear the old man thought the tree was alive

And the tree keeps on singing
Life has no end or beginning
Like a bell that just keeps on ringing
The tree keeps on singing

He came back from town
With the tools that he needed to make a mandolin
Then he made a guitar
And he created for my sister a violin

With a roughly cut smile
He said we’ll need music if we’re gonna survive
And he taught us to play
You’d swear we all thought that the tree was alive

Like a bell that just keeps on ringing

A snake brought him down
Lost a two day battle with the poison and he died
The last job for the tree
Was 200 long and 60 wide,
Then we played him away
