The Spot UV Process

The way spot UV works is it is an additional process on top of the usual CMYK printing, and lamination process.
Typically the laminate is has a matt finish to increase contrast against the gloss finish of the varnish.The CMYK ink goes down, then the laminate goes down over it, then the UV varnish goes down on top of that creating the embellishment.
The design artwork needs to cater to this additional process by adding another page to the artwork pdf that is just for the spot varnish. This needs to be set up as a single PMS colour, that is not converted to CMYK(which is 4 colours).
I always recommend that this embellishment is used boldly as it is a very subtle effect that can be lost if used minimally. If you need to point it out, or look at a print from a particular angle to see then it has failed it's job. Be bold!
