ROME VLOG - PART 2 | Trastevere, Vatican City, The Colosseum, rooftop bars + restaurants in Rome

ROME VLOG - PART 2 | Trastevere, Vatican City, The Colosseum, rooftop bars + restaurants in Rome -- Rome, Italy.

For the second half of our trip to Rome, we started off in Trastevere at the quintessentially Instagrammable Bar del Cinque where we grabbed a coffee and a beer. We sat and people watched and it was really nice and not too busy. After that, we walked up to Vatican City, and grabbed a twix and some water on the way as it was about late afternoon but we weren’t ready for dinner yet. When we got there, it was really nice and not too busy, but the line to get into St. Peter’s Basilica was super long, so we decided to skip it.

We ended up back in Trastevere for dinner, but didn’t enjoy it (so I didn’t film any of it but the place was called Nonnarella - don’t be fooled by the lines of people waiting to dine there, it’s not worth it). The next day, we got up early and I opened the balcony doors, made breakfast and we quickly (very quickly because we were running late) walked over to The Colosseum. The tour times don’t really matter (we bought our tickets on their direct website) because there were hoards of people (it was pretty packed) and it’s actually a self-guided tour, which we didn’t realise until we were inside and asked at the information desk. I’d recommend booking the arena if you can, we really enjoyed it although wished it was guided and not self-led so we could have gotten more information.

After our walk around the Colosseum, we were super hungry so headed to il Giardino ai fori for a little bite. I got eggplant bruschetta with a mozzarella ball and ricotta which was so good. Josh got truffle & mushroom pasta, quite mild but also very tasty. I ordered a glass of prosecco and while trying to take a photo, knocked most of the glass over, they were so kind and gave me an even more full glass for free. I thought I’d have to pay but they were so kind and helpful in cleaning up my mess (it went everywhere). We made some carbonara at the Airbnb (linked below) for dinner and then headed for some drinks back in Trastevere.

The next day, we checked out of our Airbnb and headed back to The Hoxton which is where we stayed for our last night. We grabbed lunch at their restaurant Beverly which was phenomenal – all the food was superb and the cocktails were delicious, too. Really well priced as well for such high quality food in a gorgeous place. I wanted to go on the row boats in Villa Borghese, so we walked there (it’s super close to The Hoxton) and we rented a boat. It’s 4 euro per person for 20 mins which is a nice amount of time. We walked through the park afterward and over to Cielo Terrace which is on top of a Rocco Forte hotel and has beautiful views of the city. Would definitely recommend going there to watch the sunset, but prices were high (although we got free snacks). 1 regular bottle of beer was 12 euro, which was about 3-4x anywhere else, but I guess you pay for the view, too. We tried to do a little shopping afterward near The Spanish Steps but it started raining so we headed back to our favourite restaurant of the whole trip, which was right next door to The Hoxton called La Balestra. We checked out the next morning and headed to the airport.

In terms of travel, we flew with RyanAir and paid for priority so we could each have two bags on the plane with us (not checked). We booked the bus from Ciampino Airport (which is super small) to the central train station in Rome via Terravision, and although there are specific times, it didn’t matter. We booked a return so our ticket was sorted for the way back. Once we got the bus, we took an uber (about 10-14 euro each way) to the hotel from the central train station as we preferred not to walk with our bags and were really tired. It was quite an easy journey from Stansted (London) to our hotel in Rome, and I would recommend the route we took.

Hope you guys enjoyed seeing our trip, and if you have any questions, let me know. I've linked the places we stayed below so you can check them out!
