The Lost Meteorite

The story was told around a campfire by John Mitchell, an author of two treasure hunting books, one published in 1933 and the other in 1953.
As John's two close friends listened to him, he explained how he found the meteorite after he saw it pass over close to Parker, Arizona where he was working. He said he rode out across the desert from Parker towards a mountain that he thought it had hit. Upon arriving there he met a group of Indians who told him the flaming star had went over and was in the Chuckwalla Mountains.
John continued and ran into a prospector who knew exactly where it landed. The prospector said that it had plowed a deep furrow in the ground for some distance and was buried next to a wash close to the mountain. John followed his directions and found the meteorite just where the prospector said it was.
The meteorite was buried down about 15 feet and John estimated that it was nine feet across. He found a small piece laying close by that he picked up to take with him. It was very heavy as he struggled to load it on his mule.
Once out of the desert, John sent the meteorite piece off to be assayed in San Francisco. The assay came back saying there was platinum in it worth $12 per pound.
John was telling this story to his friends as he was never able to go back for it.

Go with me out to the desert close to Desert Center, California and let me tell you some more of the story and show you some of the marker rocks from a location of another piece that was found. Is this a meteorite field with multiple pieces and did it hit the mountain and break up into these pieces thus leaving some pieces still on the mountain?
