Live Q&A Friday: How To Practice English Speaking Alone

In this video, I will show you my top 3 tips to help you practice English Speaking alone. This is a question I got from Kevin on twitter. If you want your question to be answered tag me on twitter and let me know your question :)
Here you can find a summary of the main tips!
First of all, do all these exercises orally! Listen to your voice! This is a mistake many students make when they are studying alone! Record yourself speaking so you can check your improvement!
1. Extend your sentences. This is a simple exercise that can help you a lot. Write a short sentence. Then you will complete this sentence as much as possible. You are gonna think of ways to make this sentence longer and add more information to it. That's how you are going to do this exercise. To help you, even more, you can set a timer and then check how many ways to complement this sentence (you need to record yourself to know how you did)

2. Read aloud.Read books aloud, preferably books with audios. It doesn’t have to be a book, it can be a website with written articles with the audios.

3. English conversation speaking apps – Some apps can let you do some parts of the conversation and even record yourself. These apps have several everyday conversations you can listen to. You can also record yourself during some part of the conversation. That way you can work on your intonation and get more vocabulary, expressions. One app I have recently tested was English Conversation practice. It’s very nice. They have several different conversation subjects. You can listen to them, do quizzes about them and finally, you can record yourself. After that, you can listen to your conversation. That way you can work on your intonation and pronunciation. This kind of app is a great tool for people who do not have anybody to talk to.

Eddie's question was: How can I stop translating when I am writing?

First and foremost read read read. You need to read much more than you currently do. If you are having problems with writing, read more materials in English
Keep a journal: start by writing about your day. If you speak better than you write, before you start writing, speak the activities orally and then try to write them down.
Extend your sentence technique: you can do this too (tip number 1 for the first question) But instead of speaking, write things. Time yourself so that you can learn how you work under pressure. Pay attention at your results. They will tell you a lot in terms of what your difficulties are. When you get stuck, what kind of words don't you usually know? they are probaly connected somehow (verbs, nouns, adjectives, specific subjects). To improve your writing you need to be specific. When you start writing, what exactly do you start to translate? what kind of sentences?
