Highlights Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert divorcing

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert's four-year marriage is over.

The singers announced their divorce via a statement to the Associated Press Monday.

"This is not the future we envisioned," the former couple announced in a joint statement. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."

The two singers met 10 years ago at a CMT concert taping, when they performed together. Shelton proposed in 2010, and they married the following year, on May 14, 2011, in Boerne, Texas.

The marriage made them country music's highest-profile couple, and they saw their biggest career successes following their marriage. Shelton became a judge on NBC's singing competition The Voice in 2011, and Lambert's Platinum album won a Grammy for best country album earlier this year. The Country Music Association has named Shelton and Lambert its male and female vocalists of the year for the past five years, with Shelton winning entertainer of the year in 2012.

The pair won song of the year awards from both the CMA and the Academy of Country Music for Lambert's 2012 hit Over You, written about the death of Shelton's brother.

"We're both in the public eye, so it's kind of a two-for-one deal," Lambert told USA TODAY in 2010. "Usually, when somebody talks about one, they talk about the other."

Shelton and Lambert were plagued with rumors of relationship trouble throughout the marriage, and they often made light of the reports in public. In 2013, after a tabloid magazine questioned the stability of the marriage, Shelton tweet Lambert, saying, "I just read in a tabloid that our marriage is falling apart!" Lambert tweeted back: "Oh no! Can't wait to read if we make it or not."

Shortly afterwards, Shelton told USA TODAY, "I'm still alive, so that must be a good sign. … If it all ends, I can say I didn't do anything that I regret, and that includes marrying Miranda."

Asked about the status of her marriage last year, Lambert told USA TODAY, "I'm happy. You'll have to ask Blake how he feels."
