Rolex’s catalog consists of the same core collection of models that have been in production for decades now – the Submariner, GMT Master, Explorer, and Datejust, just to name a few. The famous watch purveyor rarely releases an entirely new model.

Still, they remain relevant and highly sought-after because Rolex continues to evolve its portfolio, equipping these pillar models with improved materials, better movements, and even new dial and bezel color options.

Years later, these pillar watches are the same models we know and love but “improved.” They’re still highly collectible and boast the recognition and exclusivity that many Rolex collectors seek, and that’s why Rolex is still such a massive success, despite keeping the same handful of models in their collection after all these years.

2022 Predictions
With that in mind, what do we foresee the Big Crown releasing in 2022? What improvements do we think they will make to their already stellar lineup?

There is buzz around the web of a 2022 Daytona release, and even Rolex discontinued 2022 watches. With that in mind, let’s dive into our Rolex predictions for the upcoming year.

ROLEX MILGAUSS
For 2022, we predict that Rolex could go in either direction with the Milgauss by giving the model a long-overdue movement upgrade or discontinuing the collection altogether.

The Milgauss famously hit the market in the mid-1950s when Rolex developed their core collection of tool watches. It was an exciting time for the company, and the Milgauss, with its impressive anti-magnetism, was a part of it all.

Rolex famously discontinued the Milgauss in 1988, only to revive it in 2007 via ref. 116400. Still, decades later, its anti-magnetic rating remains up to 1,000 gauss, despite advances made by other brands on the market.

Will 2022 see the Milgauss head into retirement again as interest for the watch wanes? Or will the company refresh it with a new and improved movement? Perhaps with increased anti-magnetism to compete with what other brands are producing?

ROLEX AIR-KING
Once again, we predict that Rolex will either bid adieu to the beloved Air King or upgrade the collection somehow in the coming year. The Air-King came to market in 1945. It remained largely the same for decades, centering around a design that largely resembled a dress watch.

Then, in 2016, Rolex took the collection in an entirely new direction with ref. 116900 featuring a larger case and a sportier dial topped with Mercedes hands. Could we finally see a new Air-King Model for 2022? Or, perhaps, Rolex will say farewell to the collection entirely?

ROLEX DAYTONA
Could 2022 finally be the year that Rolex integrates their Everose Rolesor finish (stainless steel and rose gold) into the Daytona collection? Two-tone has been an option for the Daytona for quite some time now, pairing stainless steel with yellow gold. Rolex has also been producing the Daytona in solid rose gold, aka Everose, for a while.

However, we have yet to see the combination of stainless steel with rose gold. As you might recall, the GMT Master II series recently ditched the steel and yellow gold, aka “Yellow Rolesor,” combination in favor of Everose Rolesor. Perhaps the Cosmograph Daytona will follow suit?

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER
Will 2022 finally be the year that Rolex releases a Titanium model? If it is, our money is on the Yacht-Master series. It appears Rolex is always a little more adventurous with this collection, so a Titanium model would be appropriate here. It’s also worth noting that Rolex ambassador Ben Ainslie has been spotted with a titanium Yacht-Master 42 on his wrist. We sense something exciting is brewing within the regatta collection.

As we mentioned above, it isn’t very often that Rolex releases an entirely new model, yet they did just that in 2007 when they released the Yacht-Master II. Could we see another new professional series model released under the Yacht-Master umbrella for 2022?

ROLEX SKY-DWELLER
It’s no secret that Rolex loves anniversaries, often releasing new references to commemorate important milestones for their portfolio. With the 10th anniversary of the Sky-Dweller in 2022, could we see an exciting anniversary release? Perhaps with a colorful new dial?
