TRANSCRIPT:
Hi. I'm Denise. Thank you for watching my
video. Today I'm going to talk about the
two words travel and trouble, and I will
talk about how to pronounce these words
and also why people might not understand
you when you when you say these words,
okay.
Before I begin, though, I would like to
ask you to hit that like button if you
like this video and also to subscribe
to my channel. Also, if you are able to
donate to my channel, please consider
doing that as well. There's a link in the
description box that you can use to
donate, okay. All right. To begin talking
about these words, travel and trouble are
similar sounding words, but they are not
the same. To begin with, they both have
two syllables, travel and trouble. The
stress is on the first syllable
in each of these words. They both also
begin with t-r or /tɹ/. The t-r in these
words sounds the same, /tɹ/. They also
both end in an /əl/ sound. The order of
the letters is reversed here. Here we
have e-l, and here we have l-e, but the
sound is the same, okay. These are both /əl/ /əl/.
Travel /əl/.
Trouble /əl/. Okay, so they the ending
sound is the same. The beginning sound and
the ending sounds are the same. Where
these two words differ and where I often
hear people confusing the sounds
is in the vowel sounds. So the the
letter a with the sound /æ/ in this word, and
the two letters o-u or the sound /ʌ/ in
this word. And then also with the letters
v or the sound /v/ and the letter /b/, I'm sorry, b or the sound /b/. So, in my experience
when I have heard people confuse these
words, when I've heard them make the words
sound the same, it is because they're
using the same vowel sound here and the
same consonant sound here, but these two
words differ in these areas, okay. Here's
the transcription of the two words. So
you can see that they both have the /t/ /ɹ/,
the t-r, /tɹ/. They both have /əl/ at
the end. And I have written it with a
schwa sound and the /l/ sound. This is how
you find it in dictionaries. You may see
other transcriptions for this, but
notice here the difference is, again, as I
said over here, are the vowel sounds. The
/æ/ in the word travel and the /ʌ/ in the
word trouble. Also, the /v/ in the word
travel and the /b/ in the word trouble.
Briefly, to make the the t sound, the
/tɹ/, we put the tip of our tongue on
the ridge behind our upper teeth, and to
make the /ɹ/, we pull our tongue back.
/tɹ/ /tɹ/. There's no additional sound
between there, /tɹ/.
So start with the tongue on the ridge.
Then pull it back for the /ɹ/
