For 20 years, the Herero people endured forced labor and land seizures in silence.

Then in January 1904, they struck back — and for a brief moment, the colonizers ran.

Germany's response was not a battle. It was annihilation.

Their most ruthless general marched his army toward the Herero people. When they escaped into the desert, he poisoned the water wells.

Tens of thousands died of thirst in the sand. Those still alive were thrown into concentration camps and subjected to medical experiments.

80% of the Herero people were gone.

For 117 years, Germany said nothing. No apology. No recognition.

Until 2021 — when they finally called it what it was: genocide.

This is the Herero Genocide — the first genocide of the 20th century.
