Back when the docks of Oakland hummed with industry and the Golden Gate was just gettin' its shine, a fellow named J Stalin was making a different kind of noise. This ain't your usual juke joint jive; this is "Weirdo," a tune that throws a spotlight on anyone who marches to the beat of their own drum, Oakland style.

The record opens with a mournful saxophone wail, backed by a walking bassline as slick as a fresh-paved street near Lake Merritt. Then Stalin steps to the mic, his voice a gravelly whisper that cuts through the smoky air, talkin' about folks lookin' at him sideways, about marchin' to his own syncopated beat. The piano chords are dark and intriguing, perfectly mirroring the lyrics that speak of a man comfortable in his own peculiar skin.

He ain't tryin' to fit in, see? He's just layin' out the facts of life in the East Bay, and the crowd at The Golden Gate Club, they ain't just listenin'; they're noddin', tappin' their feet, feelin' every word down to their bones. He makes being an outsider sound like the only way to be. Between choruses, he leans into the microphone with that genuine Oakland swagger, "They can call me peculiar, but they can't call me broke," he drawls, and a ripple of knowing laughter goes through the joint.
