The Mask of Zorro Soundtrack Suite

This is my compilation of James Horner's Score to the film The Mask of Zorro. Listed below are the tracks I used, in order:

1 - Plaza of Execution (0:00) (The opening hits are huge. It was a selling point for the film to thrust you right into an action sequence and James Horner was able to do that. His ability to envelope you in the stylistic musical culture of the film is one thing he excelled at. That and Sea Chanties.)

2 - Elena and Esperanza (4:51) (I might get attacked for this but you might notice that I am using mostly action sequences from the tracks I use. The thematic material for this film was reduced to two themes and you will hear them eventually. What you will hear a lot of in the films is those theme variations more than the beautiful statements you would typically hear from Horner.)

3 - Elena's Truth (6:44) (The love theme, which serves more as Elena's Theme than its namesake, is featured here with darker undertones.)

4 - Stealing the Map (8:08) (Man oh man, the music for this scene was great! At 9:45, when he challenges Captain Love, that low piano always gets me geared up. I love that Horner used it more as a percussive instrument than for melody or even bass. Always with the flamenco dancers, statements of the heroic Zorro Theme and brass driving the music.)

5 - Fencing Lesson (12:31) (Because this music captures two separate scenes, I included the whole track. It's fun, a change of pace from the many, MANY action scenes.)

6 - Ride (17:46) (Zorro and his horse are one of the many running gags in the movie. After watching this scene and seeing how good Alejandro is with horsemanship, it furthers it with his inability to mount Tornado. Plenty of Horner French Horn, one could argue that this scene is dainty in score. It's definitely fun to watch.)

7 - Tornado in the Barracks (20:57) (Zorro's first action sequence does not fully utilize the Zorro Theme because he really isn't there yet as a hero. Still selfish, still reckless but confident, the music here keeps playing the theme but in various modes, never in full dramatic effect like it is for the original Zorro.)

8 - Leave No Witnesses... (24:49) (I felt like I had to include this because people might get upset, fans of the score and all. I start with the showdown with Zorro and Captain Love because that sun glinting off of his sword is so boss. You get to hear the music for all retribution kills and a tender lead-in to...)

9 - Diego's Goodbye (29:14) (This is the only real statement of the Love Theme I wanted to include because the song featured on the album is horrific. Admittedly not the best bass work from Horner but the swelling strings make up for it. It ends in old school Horner fashion.)

I do not own any copyright music from The Mask of Zorro, just ownership of this suite. Purchase The Mask of Zorro by James Horner on iTunes if you liked the score. There are so many tracks on this album that run at least 8 minutes, it was tough to narrow down sections to deliver, in my humble opinion, the best parts of the score to keep you interested and entertained. There are 13 tracks on the album and I used score from 9 of them. That's an improvement since I used to listen to only five of them growing up. As always, comments are welcome and encouraged.
