Reaffirming California's Climate Leadership: Insights From The Energy Policy Simulator

California has long been one of the country’s strongest climate leaders, and with nearly 40 million people and the world’s fifth largest economy, the state has demonstrated transitioning to clean energy and growing prosperity can go hand in hand.

However, despite its ambitious targets, California is falling far short of its climate goals without further policy action, and rising impacts from climate change only heighten the challenges facing the state.

This webinar outlines new research from Energy Innovation showing faster electrification, more clean energy, and a handful of other smart policies can get the state’s decarbonization efforts back on track while adding billions to its economy, creating tens of thousands of jobs, and improve public health.

But fast action on those policies are essential— the model’s business-as-usual scenario finds the state is only on pace to reduce emissions 22 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, well shy of its 40 percent target.
