Block 6 is another block which needs to have the background pieced. Pressing the seam open will reduce bulk, and then an applique rectangle completely covers the seam. The swirls go underneath a couple of the rectangles on this block, which makes it different from the prior pieced background block. Nancy shows how to pre-fuse the M section of the appliques before adding them to the block's background.
