How to install Linux on a Chromebook
#linux #chromebook #googlechrome #opensource
Didn't mention it in the video but, it's possible to BRICK your chromebook during this process. Keep that in mind! I'd also like to mention that I'm a complete noob when it comes to tehc butttt hey we all start somewhere!
Links:
Command:
cd; curl -LO https://mrchromebox.tech/firmware-util.sh
sudo bash firmware-util.sh
(this process also involves wiping your chromebook)
1. Check Device Compatibility
Go to: https://mrchromebox.tech/#devicesFind your Chromebook in the list and check:
* Can it run UEFI firmware?
* Is RW_LEGACY or Full ROM available?
If Full ROM is supported, that's the cleanest method. If not, you can still dual boot using RW_LEGACY.
2. Create Ubuntu Bootable USB
On another PC:
* Download Ubuntu (latest version or whichever you'd like)
* Use Balena Etcher to flash Ubuntu to a USB drive (recommended 16gb)
3. Disable OS verification
- Boot up chromebook
- Press esc + refresh + power (when screen turns black keep holding refresh and esc until a new screen pops up)
- Press Ctrl + D to enter OS verification screen
- Press enter to turn OS verification off
4. Enter the Dev Console
- Turn Chromebook off and boot back up, log in as guest
- Open Chrome
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Refresh to enter the Dev Console
- Type in username should be: chronos
- Type: cd; curl -LO https://mrchromebox.tech/firmware-util.sh
- Type: sudo bash firmware-util.sh (these commands install the MrChromebox Utility which is being used as a medium to safely modify the chromebook’s firmware, we are using his script kinda like jailbreaking our Chromebook)
- Follow the prompts
- If WP (write protection) is enabled, power off your Chromebook and find out how to disable it (varies on Chromebook model)
- Once you’ve disabled WP follow through all the previous steps (Enter the Dev console steps 1-7) ^
- If your device supports Full ROM (UEFI):
* Choose Option 2.
* Follow the prompts carefully. If asked, back up your firmware to USB.
If your device only supports RW_LEGACY:
* Choose Option 1 instead.
You'll dual-boot Ubuntu via USB
***(remember this method involves removing chromeos and replacing it with Ubuntu, if done incorrectly your Chromebook may be cooked)***
5. Run the MrChromebox Firmware Utility
You’ll see a menu that says:
Default Boot
- Boot Menu
- Boot manager
6. Plug in your USB drive
- Open Boot Menu
- Press enter when hovering over your USB drive
- Press enter when hovering over Try or Install Ubuntu
7. Install Ubuntu
- Just follow the prompts and let Ubuntu install
- It’ll take about (20-30 mins to be done this phase)
