Don’t believe any “top cities” ranking that puts Vancouver on it

Here’s something that happens often: A bunch of eggheads get together to rank the world’s cities, and Vancouver winds up in their top 10. But what all these indexes miss is that you can hit all the conventional measures for a good city (universities, fresh air, performing arts) but it’s not going to matter if most of your citizenry is spending half their income on a basement apartment while worrying about getting stabbed on the bus.
