Germany: Paedophile suspect's trial postponed due to fire at courthouse

The beginning of the trial against Jorg L., a man from Bergisch Gladbach who is part of an alleged network of child abusers said to have exchanged child pornography, and who is also accused of sexual abuse on children and his own daugther, was postponed on Monday due to a fire at the Cologne courthouse, one hour before the scheduled hearing.

People were seen evacuating the court premises as a fire alarm was blaring, just before firefighter arrived on site.

"It is sadly so that in the criminal case of Jorg L. today there can be no trial. On the second floor of the Regional Court in a cold room, a fire has occurred. There has been a switchboard that has started to burn, we think it has been due to a technical defect, but this has led to a whole puff of smoke development and the smoke is drawn in the prefabrication area," said court spokesperson Heike Tomaschewski.

"Jorg L. is also under investigation and had to be placed in a cell, "he added.

"However, this [the trial] is not reasonable at the moment because of the smoke," he stated, as the trial had been postponed until next Monday.

During the investigations the officers found videos, including of his own daughter, born in 2017. This also lead to suspicions of a bigger network of children pornography and children abuse of allegedly 30.000 people involved nationwide.
