From Outback Sunsets to Underground Homes: Vanlife in Coober Pedy and The Breakaways | Travel Vlog

Coober Pedy has to be the most unique town we have ever been to. Far out into the South Australian outback, Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world. Due to the extreme and brutal climate, half the population live underground in houses carved into the rock.

The Old Timer’s Mine allows campers to stay for free in the car park, but we would definitely recommend spending the $15 pp to take a self-guided tour of the mine. Whilst staying there, head on up to the Big Winch 360 bar for some delicious, and very reasonably priced, sunset drinks.

Just outside of Coober Pedy is the Kanku-Breakways Conservation Park, one of the most incredible landscapes we have ever seen. It felt like we have driven onto another planet! We would recommend spending a whole day there, waiting until the sun has set before returning home to Coober Pedy.

We would like to acknowledge the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
