TEHRAN Perspolis captain Karim Bagheri has insisted that the team are focused on becoming the first Iranian club to win the AFC Champions League.

Three goals in a 12-minute spell either side of half-time propelled them to a 3-1 win over Qatar's Al Gharafa at the Azadi Stadium as they moved up to seven points from three matches in Group B.

With Perspolis out of the running in their domestic league, the focus of the players has turned firmly to the continental stage.

"We've lost the championship so we've lost our motivation a little bit (in the Iranian league)," said the veteran Iran international.

"But the motivation is there in the AFC Champions League and we're trying to win it to make up for the disappointment of losing the league title.

"We are top of our group and we can finish top if we carry on like this."

Perspolis's victory was orchestrated by Senegalese striker Ibrahim Toure, who was fouled in the 35th minute for a penalty that was converted by Mazyar Zare and then got on the score sheet himself with a cool finish in first half injury-time.

Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht netted a third for the Iranians two minutes into the second half before Fernandao pulled one back for the Qataris midway through the second period.

Perspolis coach Nilo Vingada felt that the victory, which came in torrential rain at the Azadi Stadium, was significant for his team.

"This was a very important match for us and it's a big step towards qualifying, although I think the other teams in the group are still hopeful," said the Portuguese.

"We beat a good team 3-1 even though we were playing in difficult conditions. We played cleverly and took our chances. It was a fair result.

Vingada's counterpart, Marcos Paqueta, lamented the timing of the goals, which dealt a severe blow to his sides hopes of progress to the last 16.

"Conceding at the end of the first half and at the start of the second had a big negative effect on us and it was difficult to return to (how we played at the) start of the match," said the Brazilian.

"I congratulate Perspolis. This was a difficult match but we fought well and had good chances in the first half although we couldn't make the most of them.

"We came here to win and take all three points. We didnt but we still have a chance of qualifying and nothing is over yet.

"We still have two home matches and if we win those we will qualify."
