Stone Mallet Wrist Exercise for Kung Fu
Chinese Martial Arts are well known for having a huge variety of training methods to increase physical capacity in combat performance. Of all areas of physical performance, wrist and arm strength plays a huge part because most of the time when we engage our opponents directly, we are engaging with our hand, wrist or forearm. The stone mallet exercise was improvised to help the practitioner strengthen the joints in the arm.
While modern resistance training method uses a balanced grip, the stone mallet provides an unbalanced resistance to one side. Exercises of the stone mallet aim to strengthen not just the muscle belly, but also the connecting tissue in the joints, like tendons and ligaments. This equipment and the exercises that can be done with it challenges the arm in different angles and planes.
Benefits of the stone mallet training are more solid strikes, and a very tight grip and rotation power for use in limb locking and counter locking. Martial artists who merely practice holding and locking techniques without strengthening the arm power will only enjoy limited advantage, especially against people who are more athletic or of superior genetics. With training, a martial artist will have locks that are more painful, damaging and harder to reverse, as well as higher chances of breaking locks.
That said, successful results are more obtainable when there is good planning in place with realistic goals and gradual progress. Watch this video to see the various exercises you can perform with the stone mallet, and how to do them with good form.
