Gemini Moon - If History Had Gone Differently - Kerbal Space Program (RSS/RO)

Note: This is an alternate history. It is not factual.

In this video in the If History Had Gone Differently, Pete Conrad convinces the manufactures of the Gemini spacecraft to propose using it to get the moon by 1967. Congress holds a closed door meeting, and apportions money to the Air Force to take over and do a secret moon project using Gemini as a base craft.

The Gemini performed a circumlunar mission in 1966. In 1967, two years before Apollo 11, a secret Air Force mission, L-3 launched a modified Gemini with a one-person lander attached to the bottom. The Gemini docked with a previously launched Centaur which boosted it too the moon. Once in lunar orbit, a single crew member would EVA to the lander, undock, descend, and land.

After a short moon walk, the astronaut climbed back in and took off, eventually rendezvousing with the orbiting Gemini. The crafts would make a close approach and the astronaut would transfer from the lander to the Gemini. The crew then burned for home.

Though secret, the Gemini moon program guaranteed that the United States would beat the Soviet Union to the Moon.
