GENEVA — Violent clashes erupted in Geneva, Switzerland as an estimated 20,000 anti-G7 demonstrators clashed with Swiss riot police ahead of the 52nd G7 Summit in the nearby French resort town of Evian-les-Bains. The massive demonstration, organized by a coalition of anti-capitalist, feminist, and anti-imperialist groups, began peacefully but quickly descended into chaos as black-clad 'Black Bloc' militants engaged in street battles with security forces. Protesters set a Tesla car ablaze, smashed windows of a United Nations agency and the Banque du Leman, and hurled stones and flares at police. In response, Swiss riot police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds, leaving downtown Geneva's streets enveloped in thick smoke. Activists carried placards condemning the G7 leaders as 'warmongers' and criticizing the 'toxic alliance' between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, especially regarding conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. With the G7 summit scheduled from June 15 to 17 across Lake Geneva, the Swiss Armed Forces have mobilized 4,000 personnel, while France has deployed 8,000 police officers to secure the high-security perimeters in Evian-les-Bains.
