Suzuki GS500F - a good bike for beginners?

I discuss the Suzuki GS500F and if it's a good choice for beginners. This is the bike I started on. This example is a 2005 model.
This model has almost a cult following; and a good reputation it probably deserves.

The engineering package is very old school and by modern standards it is seriously deficient in the important areas of braking, engine design, cooling, refinement, performance, overall ergonomics, handling, comfort, weight, and safety. Suzuki have not bothered to up-date this bike [much] since it was launched.

It is however a thoroughly reliable bike that will accept regular unleaded fuel and return excellent fuel economy. Parts are relatively cheap and easy to get and it is a joy to work on. If you are even slightly handy with the tools you can do most of the servicing yourself - if you wish. It still looks good even after all these years!

The problem is this machine has been left in the dark ages by new smaller capacity learner suitable bikes like the Honda CBR250R & CB400, Kawasaki Ninja 250/300, Suzuki TU250X & Inazuma 250, and many others. In any case this doesn't matter much as Suzuki will be sending this bike to the old folks retirement home soon. It's already discontinued in the US / UK.
