The pathophysiology of hyperthyroidism vs. hypothyroidism both revolve around the thyroid.
Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease) is a condition where the body produces too much active thyroid hormone T3 T4, resulting in low TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone. Hyperthyroidism classic high & hot signs and symptoms: constipation, weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss (alopecia).
Hypothyroidism (Hashimotos Disease) is a condition where the body does NOT produce enough T3 T4, exhibiting high TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). Hypothyroidism manifests classic low and slow signs and symptoms: High blood pressure, Tachycardia, High temperature, & class Exophthalmos (large eyes) and Goiter (large throat).
Both could be exacerbated into extreme conditions, Myxedema Coma for hypothyroidism & Thyrotoxicosis (Thyroid Storm) for hyperthyroidism.
