This PROLIFIC 1981 #1 Smash SOMEHOW Got a CRUDE F-Bomb Past Censors ACROSS Radio!--Professor of Rock

Coming up. Rockstar couple Debbie Harry and Chris Stein from Blondie were sitting on the couch watching Pro Wrestling and in the midst of the action they wrote today’s featured song Rapture in about 10 minutes… It was a silly song about a man from Mars eating cars and people. It actually had very rapid-fire lyrics... even so, Debbie recorded it in just one take. They planned to call the song Coca-Cola, but Coke had some issues with that and there’s the lyric that everyone swore was the singer dropping a crude F-bomb, but the lyrics sheet listed it as finger-popping… Even so, Rapture became the first song of its genre to hit #1. Up next, the amazing story of Blondie and their 80s classic Rapture, the first rap song to hit #1…and it was by a new wave group! Next on Professor of Rock.

The first commercially released rap single was “King Tim the 3rd” by the Fatback Band in ’79, Followed 6 months later by the powerhouse classic “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang: But the first commercially released single with rap vocals to reach #1 on the Hot 100... was actually a band that would be more recognized and categorized as new wave… It was “Rapture” by Blondie: Blondie finished the 70s with a huge #1 smash- “Heart of Glass” from their epic album Parallel Lines in ’79. Which had a touch of disco And then the band entered a new decade with the biggest hit of 1980 in the U.S.... “Call Me” from the American Gigolo soundtrack- that ruled the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for an amazing 6 weeks:

Yes, Blondie began the 80s as one of the hottest bands in the world- fronted by one of the most recognizable music icons.

It seemed that all they had to do was keep following the formula, so to speak, and the hits would keep on coming. But, the leaders of Blondie- Debbie Harry & Chris Stein were restless with their obsession about the nascent hip-hop music movement that titillated the New York City underground club scene, and they were eager to break boundaries by incorporating those exciting new sounds on their next album. Harry & Stein were not only collaborating on music, they were also cohabitating as a couple at the time- living out of a loft apartment on 17th Street in Manhattan.

The couple loved to partake of the city’s club scene and immerse themselves in the ever-changing landscape of art, music, and fashion. In ’78, they heard about the burgeoning rap scene that was developing in the Bronx but hadn’t experienced it in person.

While partaking of the city’s nightlife, Harry & Stein struck up a friendship with a young artist named Freddie Brathwaite and expressed their curiosity to see what the rap shows were all about.
