The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (1959)

"Smoke gets in your eyes" has been covered by numerous artists; the first being Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra in 1934. After that it's been covered by Larry Adler and Henry Hall, Nat King Cole, Charlie Parker and Jo Stafford, Eartha Kitt and many others.
But the most well-known version of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" was recorded in 1958 by The Platters, for their album Remember When?. The group's cover became a number one hit in the US, on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. In 1959 the song went on to peak at number three on the Rhythm and Blues chart. On the UK charts the song spent five weeks at the top during February and March of that same year.

The Platters formed in Los Angeles in 1953. In the summer of 1955,"Only You" became the group's first Top Ten hit on the pop charts and topped the R&B charts for seven weeks. The Platters were the first rock and roll group to have a Top Ten album in America.

The Platters were one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era. Their distinctive sound was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the burgeoning new genre. The act went through several personnel changes, with the most successful incarnation comprising lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor.

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990
