MORLEY MINE Part 2 | Ep 16 | Scratch-Building a Structure Flat | Depot Workshop

In Episode 16 of the Depot Workshop, we transition from our initial card-stock mock-up to the actual fabrication and assembly of the Morley Mine building flat.

This project is a deep dive into scratch-building techniques to create a historically accurate representation of this iconic Santa Fe location on the Raton Subdivision.

In this episode, we cover:

Parts Salvaging: Finding the perfect windows and vents from years of accumulated kit parts.

Structure Fabrication: Marking and cutting the plastic base and layering corrugated sheets for realistic texture and thickness.

Custom Window Grids: Using CAD to design custom grids and printing them onto water-slide decal paper for professional results.

Signage & Detailing: Applying large sign decals to a flat substrate and framing them with strip styrene.

Scratch-Built Coal Chute: Ripping clear pine on a miniature table saw to create custom structural elements.

Weathering: Bringing the mine to life with black washes and dry-brushed rust streaks.

Whether you're modeling the steam era or the modern diesel era, these structure-building techniques will help you add unique, prototype-based buildings to your own layout.

*Special Thanks To:*
* Harlan Boyce, for his photo of the early version of Morley Mine.
* Dick Rotto, for his photo of the late version of the Morley Mine.
Both of these gentlemen own and operate their own Raton Pass Model Railroads and I appreciate them allowing me to use their photos of Morley Mine from their layouts.
