Greyhound bus trip through northern U.S.: (6) Boise, Idaho to Salt Lake City Utah 2010-08-29
About the driver:
This Greyhound driver became lost while trying to retrace his way back to the bus terminal to retrieve his driver log book. At about midnight, the bus got on the local interstate highway leading to the major east-west interstate I-84 south of Boise before he suddenly remembered the location of his log book.
After having announced on the PA that he was taking a five-minute delay to return to the terminal, he took the next exit and then turned west on a suburban artery. He proceeded several miles before turning south (even though the bus had just come from the north). On this artery road he would drive past a sign about two miles south reading "City Center Traffic" that pointed to the left. After having gone an estimated five miles to the south, he turned left on a main road to head east. The road ended in a dark area, presumably somewhere to the southeast of downtown, where he was forced to turn either left tor right. On turning left and then proceeding north for several miles, the bus entered a quaint night life area (unfit for large vehicles) of the Idaho State University.
Only after this did he ask if any local passenger on board might be able to guide him back downtown. When only silence ensued, he continued driving toward downtown (where tall buildings were visible), where he cruised back and forth to look for a recognizable street. Although it was suggested by several passengers, he adamantly refused to stop to ask for directions, but at all times adhered to this preferred trial-and-error method. In return, passengers were treated to a 30-minute midnight tour of the industrial zone and the Boise State university night-life zone of Boise.
Not the affable man that Greg, the previous driver from Portland to Boise, was to start with, this driver would remain sour for the rest of the way to Salt Lake City, scolding passengers whose feet had blocked the aisle when he went to use the lavatory at a rest stop.
About the video:
The long night-crossing of the wide "Idaho desert" (not filmed) eventually gives way to dawn over Utah's long north-south valley near Ogden, followed by an early-morning arrival at Salt Lake City's new intermodal terminal.
