When World War I Soldiers Used Dead Bodies as Trenches

In the chaos of World War I battles, particularly during the stalemates on the Western Front, soldiers faced a scarcity of safe positions. In some instances, troops dug trenches over the bodies of recently killed comrades or enemies, using the mass of decomposing flesh as physical barriers against enemy fire and shrapnel. This grim strategy was born out of necessity, as the muddy, shell-pocked terrain made fortification difficult. The presence of decomposing bodies posed severe health risks, including the spread of disease and the psychological trauma of fighting above the dead. Many soldiers suffered from infections and illnesses linked to these horrors. Though not a formal tactic, this practice illustrates the extreme conditions and moral compromises forced by trench warfare. Documentation on this is based on soldier diaries and wartime reports, which suggests the practice was sporadic rather than institutionalized.
