Maratha quota verdict’s unexpected outcome & why Modi govt wants states to get back their powers

The central government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against the Maratha quota verdict. Among other things, the judgment had interpreted a Constitutional amendment in a way that took away the power of the states to declare socially and educationally backward classes for grant of quotas in jobs and admissions. The Centre has now approached the Supreme Court asking it to retain the states' powers.
