Eleventh Pinto memorial lecture,an annual event organized by Pinto Smaraka Samithi to commemorate the life and works of Dr. C.Pinto. 05.07.2016, Fourth estate hall, Press club, Trivandrum.
In the first part of this lecture, the role of trust in the practice of medicine is discussed, and certain observations on possible reasons of growing distrust towards modern medicine is presented from a "sociophysiologic" viewpoint. It is argued that throughout most of human history ,till quite recently, the only effective therapeutic agent available to us was the doctor himself/herself. In the second part, the role of "merchants of doubt", who orchestrate influential misinformation campaigns against science based medicine is briefly discussed. Citing the examples of three such peddlers of pseudoscience, the need to evaluate such allegations in the light of often masked commercial interests of the propagandists is emphasized.
