Bangkok Flood 2011

In 2011 The Chaophraya River flooded over a period of about six weeks. This video, one of the first I ever produced, was shot in the roads close to where I live. Other places were far more severely affected. The way in which the Thais dealt with adversity impressed me.

The water from the river has been flooding the top end of the road for a couple of weeks. This happens sometimes towards the end of the rainy season. This year, however, it has been persistent and the inundation has gradually advanced, ebbing and flowing with the state of the tides.

For the past few days the flooding has become more severe.

At first the water creeps along until it reaches the main road.

Many shopkeepers have constructed temporary walls and utilise sandbags but still the water seeps in.

As far as possible life goes on as normal. The buses run and the rubbish is collected every night.

The calm resilience of the Thais when faced with adversity is impressive.

The water eventually crosses the main road.

The higher it gets in the faster it flows.

It's inconvenient but people can still get around even if sometimes the water is a little too deep.

That must have facility, the mobile phone, has hardly been affected at all.

In the lanes across the main road the water has hardly encroached. It seems to just run down the main road and into the drains.

Fortunately the flooding here in central Bangkok has not been as severe as in other areas of Thailand.

Some people are taking advantage of impromptu car wash facilities while many of the children are enjoying the experience.

One of the best restaurants in the locality has been closed for a number of days but all is not lost. If you visit Bangkok and happen to like coffee cake that melts in your mouth rest assured, they intend to open for business again just as soon as possible.
