"Ball and Chain" by the YellowHouse Blues Band

"Ball and Chain" was originally written by Big Mama Thornton and then later released by her in 1968. It gained legendary status thanks to Janis Joplin's emotionally charged live performances of the song, famously at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and later at Woodstock in 1969. It is included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". This song is part of our "First Ladies of the Blues" show, paying tribute to the pioneering female singers who've helped shape the Blues from the 1920's to today!
This video was recorded in December of 2025 at The Extended Play Sessions Fallout Shelter in Norwood, MA. The Fallout Shelter is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to preserve and promote live music. They're also a functioning sound stage and recording studio, with an intimate cabaret style theatre built in for a live studio audience. The venue is in the basement of a 250 year old mill in Norwood, MA and is DEFINITELY worth the trip! Thank you to Bill Hurley and EVERYONE at The Fallout Shelter for making this night possible!
