Introduction To Black Diesel - How We Got Started - Alternative Fuels - Waste Oil - WMO

In this video, I've pieced together pictures and old video of our original system for processing waste petroleums into "Black Diesel" and the various changes/upgrades we made along the way to get to where we are now.

There's more than one way to do alternative fuels and we've been through several... each having it's own set of pros and cons.

Filtration for instance is cheap to setup for the most part and reliable as there are no pumps to fail, no power required. The cons here is the finished product is only as clean as the filters can get it... the cost of replacing filters regularly... and the time it takes to process.

Pressure driven centrifuges work well for what they are. They are a solid middle ground between a single pass unit and basic filtration. They definitely clean the oils better than filtration alone but again, there are cons to this setup. You now have pumps and motors to potentially fail... power costs... potential for hose failures and such due to the pressure the unit operates at... and it's limited bowl capacity for holding contaminates. This process can be faster than basic filtration... but the longer the oil is processed, the cleaner the final product will be. Again, a good middle ground.

Then the big dog... a single pass motor driven centrifuge. Pretty well the top of the line for removing contaminates from oils. Just like the small pressure driven unit, the single pass can be ran quickly or slowly. The unit we have can process upwards of 25 gallons/hr at full tilt.... but the slower the oil passes through the unit, the cleaner the final product will be. The simplicity is also nice as these units are gravity fed and the drive motor is direct drive with few things to fail (still more moving parts than basic filtration... but not as much as the pressure driven unit). The only con to this style of unit is cost. With that said, many have managed to build their own from scratch... so there is that option.
