Two years prior to arriving at the Rome 1960 Games, German sprinter Armin Hary had won the Stockholm 1958 European Championships, bringing him to the international sprinting spotlight.
After that, in 1960, Hary became the first to run the 100 metres in 10.0 seconds, setting a new world record in Zurich. So it was clear that he would be one of the top favourites for the Olympic race at the Rome Games.
At the final of the men's 100 metres at the Rome Olympic Games both the tension and expectations were high for the start. And the three false starts - one of them by Hary himself - only added to the pressure.
As expected, Armin Hary started faster than the other athletes and accelerated to the finish line to win the Olympic gold medal and become the "fastest man in the world" at the biggest stage available, the Olympic Games.
