It wasn’t quite a “Tuesday Night Music Club,” but it was close.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Grammy-winning pop-rock hit-maker Sheryl Crow returned to her nightclub roots to play a remarkably intimate show at the storied Iridium jazz club in Manhattan’s Times Square.

The performance — a break from Crow’s run of dates on Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival (hitting Camden's BB&T Pavilion on Sept. 17) — was filmed for the eighth season of “Front and Center,” the acclaimed public television series executive produced by Don Maggi of Middletown.

“I played in places like this for a long time, and also waited tables in places like this,” Crow told the lucky crowd packed into the Iridium, a room that seats less than 200 people, before one of the evening’s highlights, a tender run through her 1993 ballad “Strong Enough.”

Perhaps because of the surroundings, Crow spent a good deal of the show revisiting material from her “Tuesday Night Music Club” debut LP, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year. Hits like “All I Wanna Do” were played alongside some of that album’s terrific deep cuts, including “Can’t Cry Anymore” and the show-closing “I Shall Believe.”

Crow also joined forces with a new friend, fellow Outlaw Music Festival performer Lukas Nelson, to honor fallen rock legend Gregg Allman with a cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider” that nearly blew the roof off of the historic basement club thanks to a climactic guitar battle.

And while she certainly didn’t neglect crowd-favorites throughout the night — you’d better believe smash numbers “Everyday is a Winding Road,” “If It Makes You Happy” and “Soak Up the Sun” were heard — Crow also dedicated a fair amount of time to poppy, topically engaged material from her new album, the April release “Be Myself.”

The “Be Myself” title track and the new single “Roller Skate” reflect Crow’s reality as a parent in the age of social media, while “Halfway There” served as a call for empathy, with Crow telling the crow it was about “people not getting along, and not finding a way to meet in the middle.”

As exemplified by the night’s high point, a soulful run through 1998’s “My Favorite Mistake,” shows like this one are exceedingly rare. Crow’s been a global star for well over two decades, and she commanded the stage as such — she’s a performer capable of both grit and grace, imbuing her songs with a beguiling combination of swagger and vulnerability.

So, Sheryl Crow, playing a tiny club in 2017? Yes, it happened. And if you weren’t one of the fortunate handful of people in the room where it happened, it will be coming to TV screens soon.
