Bhobishyoter Bhoot Riview :

Story: A gang of dejected ghosts, bereft of significance, try to stay relevant in the modern age.

Review: Anik Dutta’s Bhobishyoter Bhoot makes for entertaining viewing. But there’s a caveat. Those going for the movie to see what the characters from Bhooter Bhobishyot have been up to, will be thoroughly disappointed. Because, as the director has stated umpteen times, this is not a sequel. Maybe a spiritual successor. But when the titles are so similar and both are by the same filmmaker, comparisons are bound to occur.
In the film, we see a gaggle of ghosts who have been rendered homeless because all the old haunted buildings in Kolkata have been converted into multi-storied buildings, malls and multiplexes. With their very existence at stake, some of them, from varied social and economic backgrounds, take shelter is a disused dilapidated single-screen theatre, Bati Ghar (Batil Ghar). They plan to make themselves relevant and fit for the future as contemporary ghosts. How they do so forms the crux of the film.
This seems like a good base to dive off from. But alas, it’s more of a belly flop. The film gets lost in a labyrinthine plot, overly-long character introductions, characters that are not interesting enough and a long runtime. There are subplots about the problems with journalism (a wallpaper reads ‘Journalism is organised gossip’), evil politicians, pushy goons, the fall of communism, attacks on present political dispensation and others and so on. With the director trying his best to tie up loose ends of these narratives, the main characters — the ghosts — are overlooked. So a light-hearted comedy film becomes a bit too cumbersome.
With some veteran actors, some returning faces (albeit in different characters) from Bhooter Bhobishyot and a bunch of cameos, the acting department is well taken care of. The songs, which do well to establish the characters and move the story along, are catchy and topical. And the witty, double-meaning dialogues and banter are a sheer joy.
Overall, it has all the makings of a fun film, and if seen in segments, a good film. But oddly, this is a film where the sum of its parts is greater than the whole.
