1924 Gibson L-5 Signed by Loyd Loar with George Gruhn | Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, TN
George Gruhn celebrated his 75th birthday a few weeks early by coincidentally coming across his dream guitar and purchasing it for himself. With over 55 years of collecting guitars and personally handling thousands upon thousands of vintage guitars, he has finally found “the one” that is best suited to him.
The L-5 was Gibson’s first archtop model featuring F-holes and parallel tone bars. Prior to that, the construction was very different. It’s also their first guitar to feature a 14-fret neck. Their previous guitars were archtop with either round or oval sound holes. This model is also the first one that features an elevated fingerboard raised off the top that permits the entire top to vibrate. The combination of F-holes, tone bars, and raised elevated fingerboard makes for a very different sound. The early L-5 is quite different from any guitar that preceded it.
