Visible Radiation Detection Device

This project uses an SBT-11 Geiger-Müller tube operated in a mode where individual radiation events produce visible light flashes inside the detector. When ionizing radiation interacts with the gas filling the tube, brief orange flashes appear between the electrodes and can be observed directly. Shielding experiments show that the flashes occur predominantly in the exposed region of the detector. The video includes the construction of the device, and a series of experiments demonstrating its response to radiation sources like thoriated electrode and a low-power X-ray source. The observed behavior resembles that of a miniature sealed spark chamber while retaining the simplicity of a conventional Geiger-Müller tube. The device is assembled from inexpensive off-the-shelf modules and common components.
