How To Grow Your Own Animal Food (Number One!)

Sugar beet needs cool damp conditions -- which is just what we have! It grows well and it's a good feed crop -- so why not grow some too? We use a root chopper and feed it to sheep, horses and pigs. We eat the tops too. It's a lot like turnips and fodder beet and swedes and manglewurzles -- but it has a higher sugar content. That's why it's normally grown for sugar and alcohol production.

How to feed sugar beet to livestock -- basically it can be fed raw to ruminants and horses and boiled to pigs and poultry. Pigs and hens don't mind the mud, but it's not good for the others. We eat it like spinach -- in a stir-fry, or steamed lightly.
