How To Permanently Delete Photos & Videos On Android - Easy Tutorial
To permanently delete photos and videos from an Android phone, you need to remove them from the Gallery, Trash/Recycle Bin, and any cloud backups, and optionally use secure deletion tools for extra safety.
Step 1 — Delete from the Gallery or Photos App
Open your device’s Gallery or Google Photos app.
Select the photos and videos you want to delete.
Tap the Trash/Delete icon.
Confirm the deletion. This removes the media from your main gallery but it may still reside in the Trash or Recently Deleted folder for 30 to 60 days depending on the app.
Step 2 — Empty the Trash or Recently Deleted Folder
In the Google Photos or Gallery app, go to the Trash or Recently Deleted section.
Select Empty Trash or Delete Permanently.
Confirm the action to remove files permanently from the device.
Step 3 — Remove Media from Cloud Backup
If your photos are synced with Google Photos, Samsung Cloud, or any other cloud service:
Open the cloud service app.
Delete the files there as well.
Access the cloud’s Trash or Recently Deleted folder and empty it to ensure permanent removal.
Step 4 — Clear Cache and Thumbnails (Optional but Recommended)
Android may keep cached thumbnail versions of images. To remove these:
Go to Settings Apps [Gallery or Photos App] Storage.
Tap Clear Cache.
This action does not delete your media, but it clears residual traces.
Step 5 — Use a Secure Deletion App (Optional for Extra Security)
For highly sensitive files, deleting may not fully prevent recovery. You can use secure deletion apps such as Secure Eraser, Shreddit, or Files by Google:
Install the app from the Google Play Store.
Select the files or folders to erase.
Follow prompts to overwrite and permanently delete the data, making recovery extremely difficult.
