Primary HCV Prevention Among Injectors
In a workshop from the National Drug Conference in Cardiff on the 19th April 2012 Matt Hickman from the University of Bristol, looks at the evidence for effectiveness of current interventions such as substitute prescribing and needle exchange for the prevention of Hepatitis C. He concludes that these interventions have "averted a lot of infections", but that other interventions are required alongside them to further prevent ongoing transmission. Matt suggests that scaling up HCV treatment amongst active injectors (from a currently very low base of less than 1%) is likely to be the key to achieving a significant reduction in HCV prevalence over the next 10 years.
