Why does happiness elude so many people? Happiness is a simple feeling that we’re all familiar with, but it’s also a feeling that may seem fleeting. Is there a secret to unlock long-term happiness?

For 7 years, Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world by the United Nations World Happiness Report. Finland is also a pioneer in alternative sports and festivals. These events promote a sense of community and empower personal identity. Could there be a relationship between happiness and unconventional forms of personal expression?

In this TEDx Talk, John will share his 20 years of participation in Finnish alternative sports and how the Wife Carrying World Championships, the World Air Guitar Championships, and the World Sauna Championships reshaped his notion of happiness. John Lund is curious about what motivates people to tirelessly pursue atypical activities such as alternative sports. His curiosity has lead him to become a world-class athlete in the Finnish sport of wife carrying (“eukonkanto”). John holds a BSc in Sociology, an LLB and an MBA. A Boston, USA native, John currently resides in Tampere, Finland with his amazing wife.
