RCMP National Division Pipes, Drums and Dancers performing Governor Bruce’s Ramparts

The newly composed tune was written in honour of the Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Major General Alastair Bruce, who delighted in the presence of the RCMP Pipes and Drums in his fortress for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo one year ago. Major General Alastair Bruce treasures his ancestral and historic family links to 19th century Canada, through Lords Durham and Elgin, who were his 3-great and 2-great grandfathers respectively.

The tune was first performed at the Lord Elgin Hotel in Ottawa on January 19th, 2020. In fact, Alastair was so taken with the music, and this gift to him from Canada, that when an opportunity presented itself this year, he played a recording of “Governor Bruce’s Ramparts” for The Queen. Her Majesty must have appreciated this because she asked Alastair to send a copy of Pipe Major Graeme Ogilvie’s music to her personal piper, in order that he include it in the repertoire that is played around the Royal palaces and at Balmoral Castle.

It is very appropriate that Her Majesty is the Commissioner-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and continues to ride their horses, several of which have been gifted to her throughout her reign.
