Downtown Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on a COMPLETELY EMPTY Day
Myrtle Beach looks really crazy this time of year!
For this video, I took Route 31 into downtown Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in order to drive the entire length of the main drag in town. You know, the part where everyone comes to shop and stay in hotels and check out all the attractions. It was partly cloudy, but clearing up fast and it was warm - highs were near 60 degrees. It was on Monday, January 4, 2021 at about 11 am. And as you’ll be able to see, there was hardly anyone around.
This main stretch, also known as Ocean Boulevard is right along the coast in Myrtle Beach proper. Now there’s no WAY we could have driven this entire stretch in under 20 minutes for most of the year. Myrtle Beach is still a major tourist draw, and between spring break and well into fall, it’s jam packed here, as folks flock from all over the east coast to take in the sights and warm weather and get in the water. As I eluded in a previous video, Myrtle Beach has a really big image problem these days, because of a lot of crime that happens here now. Major holidays seem to bring out the worst in people in Myrtle Beach these days. You can put the blame on both the locals AND the tourists. But as it stands, it’s still really pretty and there’s a ton of stuff to do - as you can tell.
In the 1800s, all of the Horry County beaches were uninhabited because the area was swampy and folks around here were very poor. The first hotel went up here in 1901 and oceanfront lots sold for $25 each if you can believe it. Development in Myrtle really picked up in the 1970s, and today, 14 million people come here annually. A ton of people and businesses are moving to South Carolina these days - and Myrtle Beach is now in the top 5 for fastest growing metro areas in the nation.
It got its name because of all of the Wax Myrtle Trees in the region. The whole stretch of coast in northern South Carolina is called the Grand Strand.
Here’s the rest of Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.
