The Story of the Apple Wood:
Fate arrived the same day that the Alaskan Chainsaw Mill arrived in the mail. I was living an intensely solitary life in the quiet mountain town of Paonia, Colorado. With no cell service or internet, the only way to contact people was by knocking on their door, so I headed over to a friend's farm to celebrate the arrival of the tool. I could barely finish describing its purpose before she excitedly told me that her neighbor had just cut down his Apple Orchard. It felt too surreal to ignore, one of those intuition moments that were starting to arrive on a more regular basis. So I entered his gate and drove up his long driveway to ask if he would let me save the life's work of his Trees.
It’s an uneasy moment approaching someone's house uninvited, and Carl was no exception with a large mustache and barking dog skeptically looking at some dude in a 4-runner parking outside, but I believe the majority of us are warm lovely people, and Carl was better than the majority. I asked him about the orchard and he explained how he had to remove it because the climate had changed and the buds were getting frosted off in the Spring. For almost 40 years those trees were bountiful fruit producers, but with the changing climate, the Trees only had a chance to bear fruit 1 out of the last 17 years. He said he didn’t care what the politicians said, the climate was changing and despite his best attempts, he had to remove the Trees. It was surreal seeing, what would appear on the outside to be a grizzled hardened man, feeling with his bones that mother nature was off-kilter. Then he looked at me with bright eyes and said, “I apologized to every Tree before I started the chainsaw.”
I believe if you are lucky, you will have at least one special Tree in your life, and if you’ve had it, you know exactly what I am talking about. Carl had a whole field of them. These wide slabs of Applewood are rare because orchards now predominately plant narrow growing dwarf varieties, but these Old-growth Trees and the story their wood tells is even more special because every growth ring represents a year of loving human intent. Fingers in the soil, watering, encouraging, climbing ladders to meticulously prune, and celebrating the fruit during harvest season. Carl had a deep and long-standing relationship with these beings, and although I was sad for him that it came to an end, I still consider him a very lucky man.
He was going to sell the stumps as Smoke Wood, but I told him about my portable mill, and he encouraged me to save as many of them as I could. Over the next few months of visits and milling, Carl and I opened up to each other and formed a bit of friendship, I looked forward to doing some milling and chatting and I think It's cool to try and preserve both his and the Tree's legacy through this video.
