Yama dharma raju was killed due to a 16 year old boy Markandeya.
The very name of Yama Dharma Raja strikes fear in everyone’s hearts. However, a mere 16-year-old boy stood against him and became Mrityunjaya—the conqueror of death. Long ago, Sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati performed intense penance, seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings for a child. Pleased with their devotion, Shiva appeared and asked, "Do you wish for a son who will live a long life but be wicked and foolish, or a son who will be wise, righteous, but have only sixteen years of life?"
Without hesitation, Mrikandu Rishi replied, "O Lord, I seek a virtuous and noble son, even if he lives for only sixteen years."
Lord Shiva smiled and said, "Tathāstu!" (So be it).
Thus, they were blessed with a son, Markandeya, who grew up to be a brilliant and righteous devotee of Shiva. However, when he turned fourteen, his parents revealed the truth—that he was destined to live only sixteen years. Undeterred, Markandeya resolved to conquer death and began intense penance, worshiping Shiva with unwavering devotion.
As the fateful sixteenth year arrived, Yama, the god of death, appeared to take Markandeya’s life. But instead of fearing death, Markandeya tightly embraced a Shiva Linga, surrendering himself completely to Lord Shiva.
Seeing this, Yama grew furious and threw his noose, but to his shock, the noose wrapped around the Shiva Linga as well.
At that very moment, the Shiva Linga split apart, and Lord Shiva emerged in his fierce form! With unstoppable rage, Shiva lifted his left leg and struck Yama’s chest with immense force, throwing him to the ground. The same Yama, who ended countless lives, now lay lifeless at Shiva’s feet.
The gods and sages trembled in fear and prayed to Lord Shiva to restore cosmic balance. Answering their pleas, Shiva revived Yama, but with a strict command: "From now on, my true devotees shall never be touched by death."
Thus, Markandeya was blessed with immortality, earning the name Mrityunjaya—the one who conquered death.
