Great Smokey Mountains Railroad - No. 1702

No. 1702 is an S160 class 2-8-0 built in September 1942 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA. Originally built for the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, No. 1702 was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC until 1946 when she was sold to the Warren and Saline River Railroad (WSR) in Warren, Arkansas where she hauled lumber until 1961. In 1964, No. 1702 was sold to the Reader Railroad near Hot Springs, Arkansas, distinct for operating the last all-steam powered mixed trains in North America. After a brief stint operating on a tourist railroad in Nebraska, No. 1702 was sold in 1991 to the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad in Bryson City, NC where she operates today.

We caught No. 1702 on October 15th, 2023, as she continued a busy season of fall color excursions through North Carolina's scenic Nantahala Gorge.
