How to Converge a Complex Distillation Tower

How to converge a Complex Tower

A Complex Tower is Crude Distillation Main Column, Vacuum Distillation Tower, FCC Main Fractionator, Hydrocracker Main Column, Coker Main Tower or SAF Principal Fractionator, if you know others please add them in comments section.

For today I pick-up the Atmospheric Distillation Main Column and if you are interested I can continue in future post with mentioned towers.

Step by step procedure is presented in the movie, but in general the following shall be keep in mind to speed-up the convergence:

1. At beginning keep the tower simple in order to quick converge the simulation

2. Initially estimate the desire products flow rate using the distillation curve, TBP - True Boiling Point Curve

3. Usually poor estimation of flow rates and conflicting specs are the cause for non convergence

4. Add complexity step by step and after each step converge the tower

5. Add first side strippers, one by one and only after each pumparound - one by one offcourse

6. Check product specifications to be in line with Project requirements

7. Replace flow rate specs with ASTM D86 cut specifications for each product from naphtha to diesel

8. Use 5% and 95% not Initial or Final boiling point indicated by simulator

9. For heavy gasoil and atm residue use ASTM D1160 as distillation curve

10. Modified Inside-Out algorithm works very fine

11. If stripping steam is added don't forgot to draw the sour water flow rate

Enjoy!
