Labour's plan to slap VAT on private school fees could force many to shut down, warns education chief Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, who says smaller schools are already struggling and a 20% tax hike could be the final straw.

Schools for kids with special needs and those offering specialist subjects are particularly at risk and head teachers are already seeing parents pull their kids out for September, with some rushing to pay fees early to dodge the tax.

Sir Keir Starmer confirmed the policy would be rolled out "straight away" if Labour wins the July election. The party claims this move will raise £1.7bn by adding VAT and scrapping business rate relief.
