Lorita the Amazon

Lorita, the yellow nap Amazon parrot lived in San Francisco with an Italian family for 35 years, as part of the family. Eventually her people got old and could no longer care for her so their son offered to take Lorita in., She lived in her new home for 5 years until, for unknown reasons, she was passed to another relative. Shortly after that she began having an eye problem and was taken to the vet for treatment.

The treatment included drops in the eyes, several times a day. Lorita was not cooperative and her new owner felt she had to surrender Lorita as she was not able to give Lorita her medicine without being bitten. This is when she was surrendered to Mickaboo and cared for by 2 foster Moms, Joan and Katy. Lorita's eye problem was persistant and she was taken to several different veterinarians, both in the Bay area and in the Sacramento area.

They all agreed that Lorita had an eye ulcer and eye ulcers can be hard to cure in birds. However, after several visits to UC Davis, where each time Lorita was sedated and her eye debrided, new cells finally grew in and the ulcer has not been back. During her treatment Lorita lived with Katy who is very skilled at medicating birds.

Also during her treatment Joan's daughter Shelley met Lorita and the 2 bonded, so when Lorita's treatment was finished, Shelley joined Mickaboo and adopted Lorita, who is very happy to be part of a family again. Lorita shows her happiness by singing and talking non-stop to anyone who will listen to her.
